Loose Brackets? Here Is What You Can Do

Your braces or retainers might become loose sometimes. This can result in a lot of pain or discomfort. This blog will discuss the common causes, consequences, prevention, and treatment of loose brackets. Let’s dive in!

What Are Loose Brackets?

Loose brackets are dental problems that cause pain, discomfort, and embarrassment. It can also make it challenging to eat or speak clearly.

Brackets are pieces of metal connecting each tooth in order to apply the archwire into your mouth. Loose brackets mean that they aren’t securely connected to your teeth and can easily move around while in motion.

These can be caused by several conditions, such as:

  • Improper placement of the bracket on your tooth
  • A lack of retention screws or bands (brackets with no retention screws are more likely to come loose than those with them)
  • Over-tightening of the bracket screw or band by the dentist or orthodontist
  • Improperly fitting dentures, in which case dentures may need to be adjusted by an orthodontist

The Consequences of Loose Brackets

When your brackets are loose and hanging, you may be tempted to ignore them. However, this will only make matters worse as time goes on, resulting in the following consequences:

  • Damage to your gums and cheeks
  • Gum recession
  • Discomfort during eating
  • This results in more expensive treatment if the brackets break off completely

Treating Loose Brackets

Treatment of loose brackets depends on the severity of your condition. Suppose you have mild pain and discomfort; try resting your mouth for a few days or applying ice to reduce swelling. You may also wear a soft mouth guard while sleeping if it helps with pain relief and for better sleep.

However, if these methods don’t work, see your dentist or orthodontist right away. They will assess the damage and recommend an appropriate treatment plan for restoring stability in your teeth.

What to Do If A Bracket Comes Off or Is Loose

Suppose your bracket is loose or has come off; don’t panic. It’s not a major problem and can be fixed.

When it comes off completely, use a pair of tweezers to gently place it back on the tooth. If it’s loose, try placing it back on using your fingers. However, if this doesn’t work, use floss or wax to get the bracket back on the tooth. Suppose they come off frequently; see a dentist.

When to See an Orthodontist

Sometimes, the only way to fix a problem with braces is with orthodontic surgery. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that if your gums bleed when you brush or you feel pain when chewing certain foods, you should see your dentist for an evaluation.
