Braces are one of the most common orthodontic treatments used to correct crooked teeth and bite problems. Along with wearing braces comes the responsibility of brushing your teeth, which can be difficult at first. Here are five tips for brushing your teeth with braces
1. Time is a factor
The first thing you should do when brushing your teeth with braces is set aside time. Don’t just rush through the process to get it over with, but try to make this part of your routine so you won’t have to think about it before bedtime.
This will also prevent you from forgetting and leaving the house with yucky teeth. The recommended time to brush your teeth is at least two minutes.
2. Angle makes a difference
One thing that might take some getting used to is the angle you have to hold your toothbrush to reach your braces without being impeded by them. Since orthodontic devices are often placed behind one another, it may be easier to keep the toothbrush at a downward angle and push it forward to reach every area.
3. Invest In Flossing Tools
During orthodontic treatment, flossing with braces becomes even more of a priority. Your teeth are closer together, so food particles have an increased chance of getting stuck in between them. Sometimes, your wire will prevent you from flossing entirely.
In this case, invest in a water pic or a different floss-like device that will allow you to clean the spaces between your teeth. There are even floss threaders that you can use to reach the back of your mouth or between your teeth.
Floss threaders are a cheap and effective way of flossing teeth while wearing braces, so do not count them out.
4. Change Your Toothbrush
If you feel like your brush sessions are lacking, try to make the process as easy as you can. One way of doing this is to change your toothbrush from a manual one to an electric one. You will have better results, and it’s more convenient also since all you have to do is hold a button-down for a few seconds and let the brush take over.
You’ll also want to make sure your bristles are soft and effective for removing plaque.
5. Visit Your Orthodontist
Whilst brushing your teeth with braces isn’t an impossible task, it can be more challenging to do so. If you’re still having problems after trying the tips above, it’s best to visit an orthodontist and see if they have a different solution for you.
